Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

This annual week-long event celebrates the legacy of Dr. King and promotes diversity by engaging our community in topics such as social justice, nonviolent social change, and equality for all. Events range from our annual Commemorative Dinner to the Nonviolence/Social Justice Student Essay Competition.

    MLK WEEK EVENTS

Monday Jan. 20th- Service Project: Marion Polk County Food Share Program 1660 Salem Industrial Drive NE, Salem, Oregon | 12:30pm-4:30pm. Volunteers get free MLK T-Shirts. Sign up at the SLCD office by Friday, January 17th.

 

Tuesday Jan. 21st- "The Black Pioneers" facilitated by Jennifer Taylor and the Oregon Northwest Pioneers. Session will chronicle and discuss the history of African Americans in Oregon.

Wednesday Jan. 22nd- "Look How Far We've Come" Poetry Slam

hosted by Ayesha Black of ASWOU

Wednesday Jan. 22nd

Commemorative Dinner [Keynote Address and Presentation of Essay Contest Winner]. Keynote Address will be provided by Rev Dr. Jamie Washington who is the President of the Washington Consulting group, a Multicultural Organization Development firm out of Baltimore, MD. He is also a co-founder of the Social Justice Training Institute (SJTI) and has served as an administrator and consultant in higher education for over 30 years.

Dr. Jaime Washington

Thursday Jan. 23rd- "I Have A Dream" speech discussion from the perspective of an African American professor and a Deaf perspective. Facilitated by Edwin Cancel & Pamela Cancel.

Willamette Room, Western Oregon University | 1pm-2pm

 

Thursday Jan. 23rd- "Poverty Simulation" facilitated by Dr. Doris Cancel-Tirado. This simulation will take participants deeper into the every day life challenges of low income families.

Pacific Room, Western Oregon University | 3pm-5pm. Interested participants please sign up at the MSSP office.

 

Friday Jan. 24th- "Ally 1 Training" facilitated by a Safezone Trainer. Ally 1 trainings provide fundamental skills and knowledge through terminology, activities, and discussions so you can support the gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, and queer community.
