The Veterans Connection Program was developed to identify faculty and staff across campus who are interested in welcoming/mentoring students who have served in the military. Statement: I retired after 22 years on Active Duty as a MSG with five combat tours on both sides of the fence. I served all over the world, Germany, Korea, Egypt, Iraq and Afghanistan with a few others in between. I now run the ROTC program and teach Military Science.

Statement: Hi, and welcome to WOU. I have employed and assisted returning troops adjust to civilian life and civilian academic life. This assistance has been with WOU students, family, friends and friends of my children; from all five branches of the military. Currently, my sister is the director of the Misawa Airman & Family Readiness Center in Japan, so I too have excellent resources to aide you in your transition. With me you will find a compassionate listener; someone who will assist you in identifying resources that will enable your successful transition back into civilian life and civilian academic life. Statement: I served in the Coast Guard from 1983-1989 as a Damage Controlman. I was transferred from coast to coast four times with two tours in Alaska. I had several other duties including search and rescue and law enforcement. If you would like a vet to talk to, come see me.

Statement: I am a former Army Officer who was commissioned at Western Oregon after graduating in 1987. I served on active duty from 1987 to 1990 as a First Lieutenant in the Ordnance Corps. I was a part of the first group of five who helped bring ROTC from Oregon State to Western Oregon. Proud to be Wolf, proud to be a veteran and honored to be a resource for you!

Statement: I have been an Earth Science instructor at WOU for 16 years. I was a USAF Weather Officer for 22 years, with most of my service overseas. I was in Afghanistan before the Russian invasion and once tutored 2/LT George Bush of the Texas Air National Guard. I didn't mentioned climate change, which may have been a serious oversight. Sorry. I enjoy talking to people but don't think much of social media, emails etc.

Statement: My father was an Army medic. My uncle was a fighter pilot, flying Sky-hawk jets on the USS Coral Sea. 18 years after he was shot down over the Vietnamese jungle, his remains were finally returned to my family. My husband also served in Vietnam for the Air Force. I am an Educational Adviser in the Student Enrichment Program and would be delighted to assist our student veterans in any way I can. Statement: The Communication Studies department offers a 1 credit two-day workshop on communicating effectively with veterans (COM 399: VeteranSpeak Workshop) taught by Maj. Paul Evans (Air Force, Oregon Air National Guard). Statement: My time in the Air Force was spent with the 142nd Security Forces Squadron located at the Portland Air Base in Oregon. After leaving the military I continued working in law enforcement while studying criminal justice here at WOU, completing both a BS and MA. During my first few years at WOU I worked as one of the VA Certifying Officials in the Office of the Registrar and assisted veterans with their education benefits. My current work at WOU is focused primarily on student success and advising. Feel free to come say hello!

Statement: My service with the Marine Corps included two tours in Iraq with an infantry battalion. As a recent graduate of WOU, I am familiar with the unique challenges of transitioning onto the college campus from the modern battlefield, and more importantly with just how much value can be gained from connecting with others who can relate. I have been hired as your Veterans Coordinator and Admissions Counselor to assist with not only helping you gain admission into the University, but also ensuring that you are well supported throughout the time you are here. Come by Werner University Center Room 108 to enjoy a dedicated space just for our unique population. Please stop in to learn about the resources available to you, relax in a quiet atmosphere, or get involved with our chapter of the Student Veterans of America.
