Concerning the Swine Flu

Novel H1N1 Flu (1)

What is novel H1N1 (swine flu)?

Novel H1N1 (referred to as “swine flu” early on) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. Other countries, including Mexico and Canada, have reported people sick with this new virus. This virus is spreading from person-to-person, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. (From the CDC website)

Prevention and spread of the virus

In the meantime, students can help prevent coming in contact or spreading flu virus by taking the following steps.

  • Wash your hands often.
Washing them with soap and warm water for 15 to 20 seconds is an effective means of removing germs from your hands. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol based wipe or hand sanitizer.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Try to avoid your hand by using the crook of your arm. When using a tissue, dispose of it immediately and go and wash your hands.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Avoid close contact with those who appear ill
  • If you are ill, stay home and away from others as much as possible
  • Get enough sleep and maintain a consistent and healthy diet

Swine flu symptoms

The symptoms for the Swine Flu Virus are the same as other flu symptoms.

  • Fever (Usually high)
  • Pronounced muscle aches throughout the body
  • Headache
  • Cough, sore throat and stuffed up or runny nose
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea ( mostly in children)

Flu symptoms differ from cold symptoms by the suddenness that one becomes ill and the over all intensity of the symptoms.

Stay well,
