Admissions counseling For first-generation applicants Western has a long history of educating and sending first-generation graduates into the Oregon community There are many time differences between first-generation and traditional admissions applicants with respect to their basic knowledge of the “hidden rules” of college, high school preparation, and level of family support (both emotional and financial). Western Oregon University has a strong tradition and commitment with assisting first generation college students with understanding and overcoming potential obstacles in the admissions process.
I am an Admissions Counselor from Western Oregon University. I graduated from Western Oregon University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Education. I was born in Vallejo, California and before attending Western Oregon University I lived on the Southern Oregon Coast, for 17 years, in a small town called Port Orford, Oregon. My high school graduating class totaled 35 students, and I entered WOU as a first generation student. Needless to say I am a small town kind of guy. My recruiting territories include many Oregon counties as well as Nevada. I am also the Athletic Liaison for WOU, so if you have a question about participating in any of our NCAA Division II athletics please feel free to ask me a question. While at WOU I was involved with Residential Life as a Resident Assistant and I spent two years working for the Admissions Office as a campus tour guide and a tele-counselor. Feel free to ask me any question that you may have and I will do my best to give you the most accurate answer.

My name is Andrea Arce
I am the Multicultural Recruitment Admissions Counselor here at Western Oregon University. I recently graduated from WOU in June of 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Science and a minor in Spanish. I spent five amazing years at WOU to complete this degree and took advantage of the many wonderful opportunities that college life offers. I never thought attending a four year university was in my future, but I luckily had a great counselor who believed in me and helped me along the way. After applying for just about every scholarship that I got a hold of, I was successful. Being a first generation college student I didn’t know what to expect when coming to school, but once I got here and found the many resources available on campus to help me succeed, I was able to quickly adjust to the new lifestyle. I graduated from JFK High School in Mt. Angel where I grew up most of my life. I think the coolest thing about my time at WOU was my study abroad experiences. I was fortunate enough to study in both Australia and Mexico. I have a passion for assisting at-risk, underrepresented youth, I understand the difficulty and apprehension that comes with going to college, but once you are in, it can be a piece of cake if you work hard. It is all up to you what you make of it. So please, understand that college has tons of benefits and can be tons of fun so ask lots of questions and make your future truly yours. Andrea Arce’s counties: serves every county, with a speciality in Washington county Assists: Multicultural and first-generation applicants
