International Education and Services Committee
Role of the Committee
This committee is an integral component of the university's institutional infrastructure. Its purpose is to promote international learning and teaching experiences for both students and faculty. The committee provides faculty governance for international education and services and programs and advises the Director of International Students and Scholars, the Director of Study Abroad and International Exchanges, and the Provost.
Objectives
For Study Abroad Programs:
- Promote study abroad programs in our classes and at events.
- Oversee the quality and feasibility of existing study abroad programs and evaluate new programs.
- Explore resources to create student scholarships for study abroad by working with the Western Foundation to facilitate accessibility.
- Promote international internships by sharing information about these opportunities with our colleagues and students.
- Encourage the study of foreign languages by conveying to students the value of acquiring cultural and linguistic skills.
- Explore the possibility of increasing study abroad opportunities in non-Western countries through affiliation with new consortia and/or encouraging faculty to develop programs.
- Encourage faculty to pursue opportunities to teach abroad through the NCSA and CCSA consortia.
- Review the number and type of faculty opportunities available, the number of faculty participating, and the quality of the experience.
- Encourage the recruitment and integration of international faculty, particularly those associated with our study abroad programs.
- Work with OUS to develop opportunities for faculty to participate in some of their study abroad programs.
- Over the next five years, try to increase the percentage of WOU students participating in study abroad programs to 5 percent of the student body.
For International Students and Scholars at WOU:
- Select recipients for the International Cultural Services Program scholarships (an out-of-state tuition waiver, an OUS program).
- Explore the possibility of creating new scholarships for international students through working with the Western Foundation.
- Encourage recruitment and integration of international students.
- Support the activities of international students and encourage our students and faculty to get to know the students whenever possible.
- Welcome academics and administrators from international universities that visit our campus.
