Summer Bridge Syllabus
September 9th-15th, 2007
ICS 109 / CRN 11154
Credits: (2) A-F
The purpose of Summer Bridge is to help prepare you for many aspects of college life, including – meeting new people, learning how to use available resources, and becoming a critical thinker in a diverse environment. The activities and assignments listed below are all related to this goal. You will earn two credits and be graded A-F based on these three areas:
- Attending and actively participating in all Summer Bridge activities
- Creating and presenting a PowerPoint presentation based on an assigned campus resource
- Participating in a Saturday Service Learning activity and then submitting a one-page reflection essay contemplating what you thought and felt about this experience.
Area One: Attendance and Involvement
Students must attend and actively participate in all activities listed on the Summer Bridge Agenda.
- This is mandatory!
Area Two: Campus Resource PowerPoint Presentation
Criteria:
- Students are expected to use open times in the afternoon and evenings, before and after dinner, and before and after scheduled evening activities to work on their PowerPoint presentations.
- This is a joint project between you and your assigned partner and it is expected that you will work together during the available times listed on this syllabus, and put in equal amounts of effort into the project.
- Each pair will provide an informative hand-out to all other Summer Bridge participants to place in their binders under a tab entitled "Campus Resources" at the time of presentation. The SEP/Upward Bound copy machine will be available for this purpose, to be coordinated through Office Coordinator Sherrie Solario.Do not wait until the last minute to make your copies! Please be as creative and colorful as you can, but be sure to provide all the following information:
- Location of resource
- Purpose of resource
- How this resource is funded
- Days and times resource is available
- How resource is delivered
- How students are benefited by this resource
- Ways to contact this resource
- Who are the individuals working in this department
- A quote from the person interviewed regarding their advice on how to be successful in college.
- Each presentation is to be no more than six (6) minutes long in duration.
- There will be a prize awarded to the pair that creates the highest quality PowerPoint that will also be presented to Summer Bridge 2008 students as an example of the quality we are looking for.
- There will also be 1st and 2nd runner up awards given.

| Monday, September 10th | 8 am | An in-depth explanation of this assignment will be given. You will be assigned a partner with whom you will complete you project. A sign-up sheet will be passed around for you and your partner to choose which campus resource you will research for your presentation. |
| Tuesday, September 11th | 3:00 - 4:30 pm | You will do your pre-scheduled campus resource interviews with representatives from your chosen department resource. Any time left over will be utilized in starting to create your presentation. |
| Wednesday, September 12th | 3:00 - 4:30 pm | Time will be set aside to complete your PowerPoint presentation. Remember to make any necesary copies of handouts well before time to give your presentation, so that Sheree will not be overwhelmed with large numbers of students waiting to use the copy machine all at once. |
| Thursday, September 13 | 11:30 - 12:20 pm | Five pairs will give their six (6) minute presentations to the group in ITC 211. |
| 2:00 - 3:00 pm | Five more pairs will give their six (6) minute presentations in ITC 211. | |
| Friday, September 14 | 10:00 - 11:00 am | Five final pairs will give their six (6) minute presentations in ITC 211. |
Area Three: SOLV Fall Beach Cleanup Service Learning Project
- Go to bed early Friday night so you can get up and be ready to pull out at 9:00 am sharp!
- Off to Beverly Beach to participate in the SOLV Fall Beach Cleanup
- Fun time on the Beach and Barbeque to follow
- Turn in a one page reflection essay contemplating what you thought, felt and learned about your involvement in the Fall Beach Cleanup. Turn in no later than 5pm of Thursday during New Student Week.
