About eReserves

eReserves offer faculty a means to provide students with online access to digitized reserve materials -- including copyrighted materials -- in support of their classes. eReserves are digitized reserve materials that are made available to authorized WOU students from any computer, whether in the library or off campus, via the Internet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They include PDF images of articles, course notes, exams or other materials that an instructor would like to make available to students. This type of reserve offers students the option of viewing materials without printing or copying them, saving paper as well as wear and tear on equipment.

Copyright Information
Since these materials fall under the same fair-use guidelines as paper reserves, instructors may be required to obtain permission from the publisher if they plan to use them for more than one term. Ordinarily, because of the freely accessible nature of the Internet, copyrighted materials, such as chapters from books and journal articles could not be made available electronically under the law. However, since eReserves are only made accessible to authorized WOU users, we are able to provide this access in compliance with copyright laws. Additionally, because many journal articles are available as full-text through our database subscriptions, WOU has already paid for access to these copyrighted materials, enabling us to provide students with a direct link to the text in the database and making those articles available for repeated use without requesting special permission from the publisher.

Types of materials, files and links
Currently, any item that would normally be photocopied and placed on traditional reserve can be scanned and made available through eReserves. Other kinds of electronic documents such as Internet sites, Power Point presentations, Word documents, and Excel spreadsheets can also be included in the eReserves system.

Information for Faculty
Photocopies of items to be placed on reserve can be scanned if we are provided with clean, single-sided photocopies; or instructors can scan and save documents to a TIF or PDF document. For other kinds of reserve items, please provide the file, the website address or the article citation and database in which they were located. Electronic files are accepted either on disk or as email attachments.

Additional information for faculty submissions.
