| When
I was four years old I stripped naked and drew orange and black stripes
all over my body. I crawled over I believe
that many things in our world, simple and everyday objects that we
take for granted, have beauty seeping out of them. I observe my environment:
people, objects, buildings and landscapes. Sometimes the simplest
images of things inspire me, and I allow myself to imagine how I could
use what I observe in a different way. Sometimes I become inspired
from one thing I see, and later I re-work that idea and come up with
something completely different.

There
are endless ways to create art. Throughout my life I would like to investigate
new mediums to better convey my message, thoughts, or feelings. At this
point I have been learning the many ways I can work with clay. I have
learned that working in ceramics allows many options, and many ways to
work through a problem to create something. As much as I enjoy using and
working with clay I equally have learned to respect and find beauty in
the process of ceramics. Creating something in clay has many steps. For
me the process of getting to my final outcome is as important to me as
the actual piece.
Since being naked with stripes all over me, I have matured, studied art concepts and put them to use. After four years of being in school, I am now beginning to compile and refine my own ideas of art. In the future I look forward to elaborating on my ideas and always continue learning new ways to create art. -Ellie Toombs |

| THE WORK Most recently I have been interested in the act of cataloging. I have been exploring how objects and ideas can be organized. In organized societies we are immersed in organizational systems. These systems are second nature and generally go unnoticed. By revealing structured systems, interesting relationships can be made. I believe in finding extraordinary in the ordinary. THE PROCESS Collect. Record. Sort. Catalogue. |
