You can save paper by printing double-sided

1. Open the document you wish to print and select File >> Print.
2. Choose the printer you want to use (e.g. \\bart\Lab-HLRef)
3. Click on the "Properties" button.
4. Click on the "Finishing" tab at the top. On the Paper/Output tab, choose "2-sided print" in the box labeled "2-Sided Printing"
5. Check the "Print Both Sides" box.
5. Click "OK"

April 28, 2009 See what WOU faculty are publishing
WOU faculty are constantly publishing articles, books, and chapters in books. The library is now offering two ways of locating some of these (shown below): a feed of items appearing in the Ebscohost Databases and a feed of items appearing in Google Scholar. While there is some overlap between the contents of both feeds, each contains unique items. You can subscribe to them using a reader (such as iGoogle) or visit this page regularly to see what is new.
The feeds are not a comprehensive list of publications and may also include a limited number of scholarly publications that mention WOU or WOU faculty but are not actually written by WOU faculty. In particular, publications by faculty in the humanities may be underrepresented.

See more results from Google Scholar

March 27, 2009 Google goes scholarly
Google Scholar is the newest search tool from Google, separate from its main search engine.
Its purpose is "to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research." The full text of many items is available online (either freely or by using the "Find it @ WOU" link), although in some instances abstracts with links to pay-per-view document delivery services are displayed.
Google Scholar searches a specific subset of Google's index and covers a wide range of academic content areas. The coverage is strongest in science and technology and weakest in the humanities.
One particuluarly useful aspect of Google Scholar is the ability to easily find articles that have cited the one you are looking at. Look for the "Cited by" link to take advantage of this feature.
If you are off campus, you may want to use the access to Google Scholar provided by WOU's Articles and Databases page. This way, the "Find it @ WOU" links will show up and the content that WOU pays for on your behalf will be available to you.
Please keep in mind that since Google Scholar is a beta product, things keep changing. The content, coverage and functionality may be different from when you last used it.

December 1, 2008 New Summit is here!
The new Summit is now live! You can begin searching and requesting any time.
In the first few weeks, there may be a little bumpiness as the system develops and we appreciate your patience as we work through this. One "bump" may be encountered when you request items:
To request items, you may need to enter your last name and WOU barcode (your v number with a 2 in front) OR your last name and v number. If one way does not work, try the other.

Polling the Nations is a collection of more than 14,000 surveys conducted by over 1,000 polling organizations in the United States and 100 other countries, from 1986 to the present. Questions cover politics and elections; big issues such as health care, education, and the environment; personal beliefs and household activities such as commuting, prayer and religion, and sleep habits; and opinions of prominent people. All the polls in the database used scientifically selected random samples.

October 9, 2008 Re-send Interlibrary Loan requests placed between October 4-8, 2008
We recently discovered a problem with our interlibrary loan system that prevented us from receiving some requests between October 4th and October 8th 2008. This issue does not impact Summit requests.
If you submitted an interlibrary loan request during these dates and retained a copy of your request confirmation, please forward that confirmation to ilibloan@wou.edu.
If you submitted a request during that time and did not retain a copy of the confirmation, please re-submit the request so that we can find the item for you.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to correct this situation.

April 14, 2008 A new look for JSTOR
JSTOR unveiled a sleek new look on April 7, 2008! If you already are familiar with JSTOR, you will find that the basic and advanced search screens retain many familiar features while adding some neat new features, including easier viewing and printing of article PDFs.
Highlights of the new features:
- In Advanced Searching, searchers can now specify that search terms be within a certain proximity to each other (within 5, 10, or 25 words). Using this feature can greatly improve full-text search results.
- Save citations within JSTOR and access them again at future sessions. To use the feature, create a MyJSTOR account from the tab at the top of the screen.
- Simplified printing and viewing of articles in PDF format.
All searches from a session are retained and can be reviewed.
To learn more, watch several short tutorials on the new features at:

April 1, 2008 Student survey regarding e-books
A company called ebrary is currently conducting an online survey to better understand students' usage, needs, and perceptions with regards to e-books. If you choose to participate, please respond before April 11, 2008.
We would not ordinarily request that you complete a commercial survey such as this. However, it asks many good questions that would help us better understand your current needs and preferences. In addition, the company will provide us with the complete results data for WOU. A similar survey was conducted of teaching faculty last fall. Your responses will help us to evaluate and improve the collections and services we offer. Posted by kincanj at 12:58 PM | Comments (0)
March 31, 2008 Question of the Week 1

March 20, 2008 Too much email?
Do you find the deluge of email in your WOU account overwhelming? You can reduce the number of messages by setting your list preferences for All Faculty/Staff or Students to digest. This setting will cause you to receive only one message (containing all of the content you currently get) each day from these busy lists.
To set up digest mode:
- Go to http://cougar.wou.edu/mailman/listinfo
- Click on the name of the list you would like to set to digest.
- At the very bottom of that page, click on the button labeled "Unsubscribe or edit options"
- Most likely you will not have set a password yet, so you will need to have the pre-assigned password sent to you. To do this enter your email address in the top box of that page, then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "Remind"
- Log in to you WOU email and retrieve the password
- Use the link included in the message you received and enter the password in the box on that screen to log in
- On the account settings page, scroll down to the section labeled "Your [email list name] Subscription Options"
- In this section, there are two settings relating to digests "Set digest mode" and "Get MIME or Plain Text Digests?"
- Set digest mode to "On"
- Most likely you will want to get MIME digests. A MIME digest has a summary table of contents, which allows you to scan the subject of each message and directly access each message individually. A plain text digest is a simpler form of digest, in which the messages are simply put one after the other into one large text message. Most modern mail programs do support MIME, so you only need to choose plain text digests if you are having trouble reading the MIME ones.
- Click on "Submit my changes" at the bottom of the page!

- Take clear, accurate notes about where you found specific ideas.
- Write down the complete citation information for each item you use.
- Use quotation marks when directly stating another person's words.
- Always credit original authors for their information and ideas.

June 28, 2007 Buying our used books
Many people ask us if we ever have a book sale. We did not for many years because of the labor and storage issues, but we now have an ongoing book sidewalk sale through BetterWorld.com. Read more...
We receive a portion of the proceeds back, and Better World Books gets to do all the work. Shipping is free for customers in the US. A for-profit social venture, Better World Books funds literacy projects in the United States and worldwide.
Our "sidewalk sale" includes our withdrawn books and those gift books that we chose not to add to the collection. BetterWorld's categories can occasionally be a little wonky, but see if there's anything you like.

March 24, 2007 Library Website Changes
The WOU Library has converted its web pages to reflect the current WOU template. This is a cosmetic change; the content and organization remain the same. For those faculty linking to the library on their personal pages, please change your links to: http://www.wou.edu/provost/library/index.php
University Computing Services will be ensuring that links to the library on the campus web site are changed to reflect new addresses. If you happen upon a broken link on the library web site, or a link to an older version of a library page, we encourage you to email: Bryan Miyagishima with the information.
