New Summit catalog coming December 1!
As of December 1, 2008, you will have a new and improved Summit catalog. If you are already familiar with WorldCat.org, you pretty much know what the new Summit interface will look like. We've inserted a couple of screen shots from the new catalog below to give you a preview.
One major advantage of the new system is that one search will connect you with items at the Summit libraries AND at libraries worldwide, rather than the separate systems & searches required now. Additionally, some article searching will be available in the new Summit. Otherwise, the resources available through Summit itself remain the same--what's changing is the look, feel, and functionality of the online catalog.
Services during the transition will be uninterrupted--you'll still be able to order and receive items through Summit.
Some important details...
NOTE: As the system develops, changes are happening rapidly. We will try to update this page as they occur.
Perhaps the most disruptive aspect of the transition is that, with the first release of the new catalog, you will not be able to renew items borrowed through Summit. In light of renewals being unavailable, the Summit libraries are extending the standard loan length to 4 weeks 6 weeks (up from the current 3 weeks). The short-term Summit loan, often applied to audiovisual materials, will remain at 3 days, without renewals. We at Hamersly Library as well as the entire Summit organization fully understand the inconvenience of this temporary change, and the return of renewals is a very high priority. However, the complexity of the software combined with an extremely tight implementation timeline forced this difficult decision. We will make every reasonable effort to remind you of your due dates so to avoid late fees accruing. You will still be able to renew materials you borrow from the Hamersly Library collection.
If you live outside of the "Monmouth-Independence metro area," you may have chosen to use Summit's "pick-up anywhere" feature to have your Summit books delivered to Willamette University's library (for example) rather than to Hamersly Library. This feature will be available in the new Summit, but before you can utilize it, you must first visit and "register" with the library at which you wish to pick up materials. The conversion to new software will not affect your ability to visit other Summit libraries and borrow from those collections in person by presenting your WOU ID card. If you choose to visit another Summit library to check materials out, you must register with that library before you may check materials out.
