Dr. Roy Lieuallen was born in August 1916 in the small
Oregon town of Weston. After graduating from high school, Dr. Lieuallen
was hired by a family friend to work on his farm with the stipulation
that the money go to a college education. Lieuallen graduated from Pacific
University in 1940, and later served with the Navy in the South Pacific
during World War II. Once his tour of duty was over, Dr.Lieuallen pursued
his Masters degree at the University of Oregon, completing the requirements
in 1947.
Dr. Lieuallen was appointed as University Registrar and Coordinator of
Instruction at the Oregon College of Education (OCE) in 1946. Dr. Lieuallen
took time off from OCE in 1953 and 1954 to earn his Doctor of Education
from Stanford University. Dr. Lieuallen was appointed President of OCE
in 1955, a position he held until 1961. Dr. Lieuallen left OCE after being
appointed Chancellor of the State System of Higher Education, a position
he held for 20 years until his resignation in 1982.
Dr. Roy Lieuallen was married to Barbara Wales, and the couple had four
children. Besides being a family man, Dr. Lieuallen was active in the
Methodist Church, Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, and many higher education
organizations on both the state and national level. In 1960, Pacific University
honored Dr. Lieuallen with a Doctor Of Humane Letters.
