Building - McArthur Stadium


CONSTRUCTION DATES: McArthur Stadium was built in 1980 and the playing surface replaced in 1987.

 

REMODEL: McArthur Field underwent a remodel and modernization in 1987 by Rekortan Sports Corp. of Seattle, who also built the track for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Additionally, a major renovation of the facilities was completed in 2000.

 

CONSTRUCTION COMPANY: Information on the stadium contractor is unavailable. The football field was built and laid by volunteers.

 

COSTS: McArthur Field and the track surface cost about $146,000. The cutting edge track and field was priced at $500,000, but the university agreed to serve as a showcase for the new surface for the reduced cost.

 

ARCHITECTS AND BUILDING STYLE: McArthur Field is an open-air stadium with facilities located under the seating area.

 

CURRENT USES: McArthur Field is home to the athletic field and track. In addition, McArthur Field features a fully-equipped weight room.

 

HISTORY: McArthur Field was built to replace Memorial Stadium which burned to the ground in spectacular fashion in 1979.

 

OTHER INTERESTING FACTS: The football field, built by volunteers from the football team and the Oregon National Guard, was one of the first of its kind. The field is flat surface rather than a crowned one and is able to drain nine inches if rain an hour. The track features a world-class surface such as those used during the Seoul Olympic Games. The facility is named after Coach William McArthur, multi-sport coach and football head coach from 1947-1982.
