I am an instructional designer at Oregon State University where I work with faculty to build fifteen to thirty online courses per term. With the help of the multimedia team, faculty can create professional video recordings of lectures and interviews, narrated PowerPoint lectures published through Adobe Presenter, and a variety of multimedia learning resources such as animations, simulations, and games. My primary responsibilities include coordinating each course building project, helping faculty prepare materials, editing faculty-created materials, building multimedia resources with tools such as Articulate Storyline, and putting everything together in the learning management system to create effective online courses.
The courses I took at Western Oregon University helped me build skills in aligning course learning outcomes, module-level learning outcomes, instructional materials, learning activities, assignments, and assessments. They also helped me develop greater technical skills in using a variety of tools. The most important thing I learned was how to keep up with new technologies, especially Web 2.0 tools.
Even before graduating from WOU, I was offered an Instructional Technologist position with Corban University. This is my dream job! I get the chance to work on a whole range of things. Here are just a few: I drive the function and design of our Learning Management System (LMS), a customized version of Moodle. I work on a number of initiatives to help us offer programs to students who might not otherwise be able to get their degrees. Our LMS works on any mobile device so entire degree programs can be completed using just an iPad that we provide.
I picked up a lot at WOU that's definitely helped me in my job. The Big Thinkers class helped me grasp how today's students learn and gave me ideas on how to connect with them. In my position, it's my job to help us be on the cutting edge of everything that merges technology and education, and the Emerging Technologies course helped me with how to get on and stay on that edge. The Designing Information class helps me with developing some of our online resources and marketing, and is helping me teach a similar class myself!
I am working as the Instructional Design Coordinator for Western Oregon University, where I create course materials for live, hybrid, and online courses to suit multiple learning and presentation styles. I also work to help university faculty find effective tools and employ innovative teaching strategies with their own students in an online or blended environment.
In addition to supportive and knowledgeable faculty, the MSED Info Tech program provided me a flexible learning environment. I was able to take most of my classes online, allowing me to work when I had time. My instructors made a point to introduce emerging educational technologies and promote discussion about current, relevant issues. Online classes afforded us the opportunity to interact with other students, share information, and work collaboratively on projects from anywhere. I felt a connection with my instructors and my classmates, even at a distance.
