TWS Conference Presenter Kyle Dahlem Kyle Dahlem

Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education
 

Kyle Dahlem's professional experience includes 26 years as a K-12 English teacher and librarian, six years as a full-time association officer, and six years with the Oklahoma State Regents. During that time, she served on the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, where she chaired the Standards Committee.

Ms. Dahlem received the NWOSU 2000 Outstanding Education Award and the 2004 Ambassador Award from the Oklahoma State Regents. In 2000, upon receiving a Title II Teacher Quality grant, she assumed the additional title of director of the Oklahoma Teacher Enhancement Program (OTEP). In that role, she had oversight of the development of assessments to demonstrate the impact of teacher preparation on K-12 student achievement, including the highly reliable Teacher Work Sample Methodology.

A native Oklahoman, she holds degrees from Kansas State of Pittsburg and Northwestern Oklahoma State University.

Peter Denner TWS Conference Presenter Peter Denner

Idaho State University
 
Peter Denner is assistant dean for Assessment and professor of educational psychology. His current scholarly interests are focused on standards-based performance assessments of educator quality and information systems in professional education.
 
He was both the institutional coordinator and the assessment coordinator for Idaho State University 's participation in the Renaissance Partnership.

Russell French has helped teacher preparation institutions design comprehensive assessment programs to meet NCATE and/or state accreditation standards. He has worked with more than 350 school systems, higher education institutions and state and regional education agencies encompassing 35 states, as well as several national groups.
   
He served on the national advisory panel that assisted Western Oregon University in development and research of Teacher Work Sample Methodology and has used TWSM in the design of both preservice and inservice teacher assessment programs. Dr. French currently chairs AACTE's Research and Publications Committee.

Martha S. Gage

Kansas State Department of Education
 
Martha Gage began her career in education as a teacher and, after acquiring both a master's degree and Ph.D., taught and served as a unit head in higher education for 16 years. While in higher education she served as president of the K-ACTE and on the Kansas Professional Advisory Standards Board. She moved to the Kansas Department of Education in 1998 and into the director position in 2000. She supervises a staff of 14 that processes over 20,000 applications for licenses a year.
 
She is in charge of the accreditation and program approval process for the 22 educator preparation institutions in Kansas. She is also a member of the Board of Examiners for NCATE. She has been a leader in the reform of certification in Kansas to a performance-based licensure system that was implemented in fall 2005. She is married, and has two children and two grandchildren.

TWS Conference Presenter Mary Gendernalik Cooper Mary Gendernalik-Cooper
Dean, School of Education
Sonoma State University
 

Dr. Mary Gendernalik-Cooper is currently the Dean of the School of Education and professor of Educational Leadership at Sonoma State University. Dr. Gendernalik-Cooper holds a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University, and an M.A.T. in Social Science Education and a Ph.D. in Education Policy Studies from Wayne State University.

   

Her research interests are education reform, distributed leadership, and program assessment. Dr. Gendernalik-Cooper has led numerous educator preparation reform initiatives, and Professional Development School collaboratives.

Gerald Girod TWS Conference Presenter Jerry Girod
Emeritus Dean, College of Education
Western Oregon University
 
Jerry Girod is emeritus dean and faculty at Western Oregon University. Most recently, he served as editor for "Connecting Teaching and Learning: A Handbook for Teacher Educators on Teacher Work Sample Methodology."
   
He has developed a Web-based simulation, " Cook School District," for teacher candidates to practice teacher work sample skills and is the principal investigator within a USOE grant of the simulation.

Mark Girod TWS Conference Presenter Mark Girod
Assistant Professor, Teacher Education
Western Oregon University
 
Mark Girod teaches social and cultural foundations of education, research methods, and learning and development. His research interests include adolescent development, science education, and applications of technology to teaching and learning. He earned a Ph.D. at Michigan State University and lives on a farm with his wife, two children and dog.
