CONFERENCE PRESENTATIONS

"Enhancing Presentation Skills - Getting the Most from Your Students" This presentation is designed to provide instructors with additional tools to enhance existing skills and provide teaching tips and techniques that can be incorporated into novice driver training programs. The presentation will target key issues that instructors face when teaching classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons. It will provide information on identifying and working with different learning styles and offer a minimum of 10 teaching tips/techniques that can be incorporated easily into existing training programs.

Richard Chidester is the Lead Instructor, Driver Training Operation at the AAA National Office. He has conducted participant involved training both in the classroom and behind-the-wheel for the past 17 years. Richard manages the AAA Approved Driving School Network nationally. His duties include curriculum development; program management and facilitation of train-the-trainer courses to support various AAA driver education programs.

"Judges As Driver Educators" The vast majority of drivers on the road have not had formal driver education. Even those who have are relying on weak memories and outdated understandings of the law. Judges, police and driver educators need to work together on educating all drivers on how to drive legally and safely.

Judge Steven A. Todd is a pro tem Circuit Court Judge that presides in the four traffic courts in Multnomah County. He also handles criminal matters (including DUII), community court, landlord/tenant, small claims, probation violations and stalking, but traffic has always been his passion. Judge Todd is a big believer in driver education and traffic safety classes. Many of the people he sees in court are sent to local traffic safety classes as part of their sentences. Judge Todd is active in many traffic safety groups. For several years, he has served on a community traffic safety coalition organized by the city of Portland.

Breakout Session #1

A: ORPC 2013 Playbook Sneak Peek (presented by Liz Taylor & Sharon Rothacker) Sample more new lessons from the Oregon Driver Risk Prevention Curriculum 2013 Playbook and experience how active and effective multimodal student centered learning can be.

B: Peer-to-Peer Traffic Safety in Montana (presented by Harold Lair & Fran Penner-Ray) Want to engage your students in learning? We will share Montana stories of student and community actions and demostrate practical activities to improve young driver safety. Participants will leave with interactive strategies they can implement in their class immediately.

C: Guided Tour of Basic Vehicle Maintenance (presented by Josh Szurszewski) A hands on session featuring a tour of the engine bay and vehicle fluid locations, procedures for inspecting and changing a tire, proper jump starting technique, information on how to inspect other wear items, as well as time for your basic automotive questions.

Breakout Session #2

A: Lanes, Lines and the Law (presented by Honorable Steven A. Todd) Traffic control devices like lanes, lights and signs are intended to inform drivers of what they can and cannot do. Yet drivers, driver educators, police and judges often disagree on what they mean. This presentation will discuss the laws and rules that apply and what we need to do to inform drivers on how to obey them.

B: Vehicles Technology - Past, Present & Future (presented by Richard Chidester)  This presentation will update instructors on the latest in vehicle technologies to promote safety, as well as a cleaner environment. Driving instructors will come away with specific knowledge and activities they can immediately put to work in the classroom to ensure their students are current on existing and future vehicle safety technologies.

C: Using Technology in the class (presented by Andrew Crites) This session will provide knowledge necessary to utilize technology in the classroom. Topics include how students learn, using online technology to increase involvment, and allowing students to use cell phones in a non-disruptive manner

Speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving will be dicussed. Trooper Finn will speak about how drivers can avoid pitfalls. Attendees will walk away with a better understanding of how to convene a message of safety to students.
