Instructor Tips for Success

  1. Communicate!! This is perhaps the most important thing an online instructor needs to do. You need to find ways to compensate for not meeting your students in a face-to-face setting. Usually email and course discussion boards will accomplish this. But some students may require phone calls or even in-person meetings, if possible. Instructors need to respond quickly to student inquiries and let the class know if they’ll be unavailable for more than a day or so.
  2.

  3. Be tough. Online students should be putting just as much (if not more) time and effort into your class as face-to-face students. Make sure your class is just as rigorous as an on-campus section.
  4.

  5. Be active. You should be spending several hours a week teaching an online class, just as you would a face-to-face course. Log into the course every day, if possible. Post messages for students. Respond to questions. Provide feedback on assignments. Update calendars and announcements as needed.
  6.

  7. Keep your course current. Make sure all the links are working, your lecture material is current, and your dates are posted correctly. You should be updating your course every term it is offered. Think of ways that you can improve the course through redesign. Get more training to improve your skills and knowledge.
