Q: Can I register for these courses online?
A: For most of them, yes! Students can register online through the Student Information System. If you do not know your PIN number to access the system, please contact DEP or the Registrar’s Office. Students can also still register by phone, mail, fax, or in person by visiting the Terry House.
Q: Does my financial aid pay for Extended Programs online courses?
A: Yes! DEP courses go onto your student account, just like regular on-campus courses. Your financial aid can then be applied to your account balance.
Q: Do I need special software to take an online course?
A: For most classes, you will only need an internet connection, a compatible browser, and a word processing program (i.e. Microsoft Word). To see if your browser is compatible, visit www.webct.com/tuneup. Fortunately, most browsers are compatible. A few courses may require other programs, and the instructor will give you that information at the beginning of class.
Q: How do I get online for my class?
A: Go to this link: Getting Started with WebCT
Q: Is it possible to meet my instructor for face-to-face help?
A: Probably. Most instructors are on-campus faculty with regular office hours, but some of them are not. The best thing to do is ask. Contact the instructor by email or phone and see if they are available to meet. They want you to succeed, so they are willing to help whenever they can.
Q: Where do I go to log into WebCT?
A: www.wou.edu/webct
Q: How do I get my login and password?
A: Once you are registered for an online course, your login and password will be sent to you either by your instructor or by DEP. If you have not received this information by the first day of class or if you have registered late, please contact DEP at 503-838-8483 or Scott Carter in the Technology Resource Center at carters@wou.edu.
If you have previously taken a WebCT course at WOU, your login and password will remain the same as for your previous course.
Q: How do I get the textbooks for the class?
A: Most of the books required for online classes will be available through the WOU Bookstore, as well as a variety of online vendors (Amazon.com, etc.).
Q: What do I do if I have a problem with the course?
A: First, contact your instructor to let them know you have a problem and see if he or she can resolve it. If not, contact DEP at 503 838-8483 or Scott Carter.
Q: Are there student tips for success?
A: Yes! Here are seven tips for student success:
- Log onto the course website everyday, if possible. At the very minimum, you should be in the course at least 2-3 times per week.
- Check your email frequently for updates from the instructor. If you will not have access to the course for more than a few days, let the instructor know.
- Be active! Stay connected with classmates and the instructor by posting message on the discussion board, asking questions when you need help, or participating in course chats. The more involved you are, the better experience you will have.
- Carefully proofread your writing. Online courses often rely heavily on written assignments, and most instructors assess the quality of your writing.
- Be self-disciplined. Online courses do provide greater freedom and flexibility than face-to-face courses, but you need to stay motivated to be successful. Keep up with assignments and readings. It is difficult to catch up once you fall behind.
- Let your instructor know if you are having problems. Whether you are having difficulty with the technology or the course content, tell your instructor. They are understanding and very willing to help.
- Don’t assume online courses are quick and easy. Online courses usually have the same time requirements as face-to-face courses. Many students find that online courses actually require more time and commitment.
