Peer tutor | Drop-in math tutor
Our goal is to help Western students acquire and maintain skills necessary to become confident, successful college students.
Job description
Tutors provide academic assistance to other students. Appointments are usually one-on-one for 30 to 60 minute intervals. Although tutors do NOT do student’s homework or assignments for them, they work to increase understanding and improve the skills of the students they work with.
Depending on your subject area, you may:
- work on problems and procedures that students have difficulty with
- practice language skills
- work on improving study skills like notetaking, textbook reading, studying for tests, time management, etc.
- work with one student or several, one time only or throughout the term
Tutors will encourage students to participate in class, utilize their professors outside of class, read their syllabus and assignments thoroughly, and to ask questions if they don’t understand. The goal of tutoring is to foster student independence, help students help themselves by stimulating active learning and building confidence in their own abilities.
Qualifications
- Tutors must have an overall 3.0 GPA with A’s and B’s in the courses you wish to tutor.
- You must have at least one faculty recommendation in your course area.
- You need to have good communication skills, be sensitive and flexible to work with a diverse student population.
- You must be a dependable, on-time employee.
Salary - the choices for tutor compensation are:
- Salary - It is not mandatory for tutors to qualify for work-study money; it certainly helps our budget when we can. Hourly wages begin at $8.25.
- Academic credit - Tutors can earn 1 to 3 hours of credit per term. For each credit hour, the tutor must be available to tutor 2 hours per week. Interested students should contact a faculty adviser in the area tutored, fill out a "By Arrangement" form, and turn it in to the Registrar. The faculty advisor will decide whether there will be any special project or evaluation attached to the experience. Credit is usually a 400 level practicum.
- ICSP - Some international students have a scholarship that requires time doing community service. In our case, tutoring fits their requirement.
- Volunteer - Some students don’t need the money or the credit and choose to volunteer. It is invaluable experience to reinforce subject knowledge, practice communication and teaching skills, and looks great on a resume.
Hours
Tutors usually schedule 2-6 hours a week to be available for appointments. If they find there is a greater need from students and have more time available, they may expand their hours. Tutors are paid for the hours they actually work with students and hours are not guaranteed. Attendance will be required for some training sessions.

You may demonstrate some problems but the main goal is to keep the pencil in the student’s hand. You will be working to build their knowledge and confidence so they are able to do the problems independently when they leave the session.
You will be working with many levels of math anxiety. Students can become paralyzed from their fear of math but it is possible to turn that fear around, even for students who haven't been successful in the past.
Tutors will encourage students to participate in class, attempt their homework before they ask for help, utilize their professors outside of class, read their syllabus and assignments thoroughly, and to ask questions if they don’t understand. The goal of tutoring is to foster student independence, help students help themselves by stimulating active learning and building confidence in the own abilities.

Salary
The Drop In Math Tutor usually is paid one step up the pay scale from the other tutors or works for academic credit.
Hours
The tutor and the Coordinator will set up a term schedule that you are available in the Center. It ranges from 6 to 15 hours per week, depending on student needs and your availability. The Drop In tutor is expected to be here during those times and will be paid whether you work with 1 student, 12 students or no one. Attendance will be required for some training sessions.
