Freshman Registration and SOAR
Once you have been officially admitted to WOU, you will begin to receive mailings from the Admissions Office which begins your process at WOU. One of those mailings will be information about Block Scheduling and SOAR.
WOU provides the opportunity for freshmen to register for a Block Schedule their first term. Block Schedules guarantee freshmen a full-time class schedule which is the first step toward fulfilling general education requirements. Most Block Schedules are designed to meet general education requirements; however, there are some Blocks that are designed for specific majors. Students will have the opportunity to make changes to their Block Schedule during advising and registration at SOAR. These schedules will only be in effect during your fall term; for winter term you will be able to change your courses and register in the same manner as the rest of the student population.
Note: Students admitted to the university under special circumstances, including Special Admissions, will be limited in their Block Schedule options.
Freshmen are not required to register for a Block Schedule. Students who do not register for a Block Schedule will use the Open Section List at SOAR to register for fall term courses, however those students who opt not to select a block run the risk of facing a limited selection of courses at SOAR. The Academic Advising and Learning Center HIGHLY recommends selecting a Block Schedule.
If you do not register for a Block, you will not be able to register for fall courses until all SOAR dates have been complete.
SOAR refers to Western Oregon University’s Summer Orientation, Advising, and Registration program for admitted freshmen. At SOAR, freshmen can take the math placement test, attend academic advising with faculty, complete the registration process for fall term courses, learn about valuable campus resources, and receive their student ID cards. SOAR is highly recommended by the Academic Advising and Learning Center.

How many courses should I take?
If you want to attend full-time, you must be registered for between 12-18 credits. If you selected a block schedule, full-time is provided. If you are on financial aid, or are an international student, or a student athlete, you must register for at least 12 credits. As a FIRST TERM FRESHMAN, you should look to register for between 12-15 credits. You will have activities outside of class, which takes time and effort, thus we do not want you to overload yourself in your first term. Enrolling as a full time student usually equals between 3 and 5 classes.
Everything is full…what should I do?
Your first term at WOU is often the most difficult to register for. You are allowed to register during the summer, prior to entry in the fall, however all other students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) have already registered. This is why we recommend you select a block when they are offered to you. The block guarantees a full time schedule, most of which will count towards the general requirements of the university. Typically, the university will hold places for freshman in many of the general LACC courses, but the amount held is not guaranteed.
