Student Privacy at the Academic Advising and Learning Center

 

The Academic Advising and Learning Center is committed to ensuring that any students privacy rights are not violated. This means we have a comprehensive policy for protecting these student rights.

 

The following information explains the federal government's policy on student records.

 

FERPA INFORMATION

 

The Academic Advising and Learning Center is committed to assisting both students and their parents alike. We are more than willing to speak with you as a parent in an effort to answer any questions you may have about the requirements that make up a Western Oregon University Degree. We would however, like to inform you of the limitations placed upon the information we can provide you as a parent. The family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1975 grants confidentiality to students regarding their personal educational information. Student Information may not be disclosed without a student's written permission.

Listed below are examples of information which cannot be discussed. This list is not comprehensive.

  • Social Security/V Number
  • Grades (including “Incomplete” (I) grades)
  • Academic Standing

The Academic Advising and Learning Center allows students to waive their right to privacy by completing a FERPA waiver form. This form grants ONE TIME access to discuss the students records with any individual the students indicates. Each office reserves the right to dertmine how long the FERPA waiver is good for. Completing a FERPA waiver in another department does not grant access to student records through the Academic Advising and Learning Center. Only forms completed in our office at time of advising will be accepted.
