printer friendly version: printerversion

MONMOUTH – The Western Oregon University College Democrats will host democratic candidates for governor of Oregon in a Town Hall Debate in Werner University Center on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. and doors will open at 6:30.

This is the only student-organized debate for the democratic candidates that is currently scheduled. The group’s co-chair Carl Fisher says, “My hope is that not only will our club fulfil its role of promoting the Democratic Party, but that we also help show people that WOU is a university where the community engages in the issues important to Oregon.”

The debate is co-hosted by the Western Oregon University Speech Communication and Political Science departments. The candidates scheduled to come are Lane County Commissioner Pete Sorenson and former Oregon State Treasurer Jim Hill.

Sorenson is a former Oregon State Senator and congressional aide to former congressman James Weaver. He was an official in the Agriculture Department during the Carter administration.

Hill is a former Oregon State Senator, Oregon State Representative and Oregon State Treasurer.

The WOU College Democrats have been active on campus since the fall of 2003. The 75-member organization helps to promote the message of the Democratic Party and the messages of its candidates to the campus and community.
The debate is free, and open to the public. For further information, contact Carl Fisher at 503-751-4619. The two candidates’ Web sites are: www.sorensonforgovernor.com and www.jimhill2006.com.
