MONMOUTH – Western Oregon University will dedicate the Roy E. Lieuallen Administration Building in honor of former WOU president and Oregon University System Chancellor Roy E. Lieuallen on Friday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at the main entrance to the Administration Building. This event is part of the festivities for Alumni Day.

Lieuallen served as president of WOU, then known as the Oregon College of Education, from 1955 to 1961. He previously served as the university’s registrar. During his time as president he oversaw the construction of the College Center (now Werner University Center), Maaske Hall, General Arts (now Smith Music Hall) and Wolverton Memorial Pool.

He was also the longest-serving chancellor in OUS history, serving from 1961 to 1982. He was credited with balancing the interests of the state’s four-year educational institutions, their administrators and cost-conscious legislatures. During his time he supervised the expansion of the Oregon Institute of Technology from a two-year to a four-year degree granting college.

He died of age-related causes on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife Barbara and daughters Barbara Topor and Molly Smith, and sons Scott and Doug.
