MONMOUTH – Western Oregon University’s First Amendment Week takes place April 13 through 17 and features several special and ongoing events. The first event is a keynote speech by Charles Hinkle. He will discuss current hot topics in the First Amendment at noon on April 13 in the Columbia Room of Werner University Center (WUC).
Hinkle has extensive experience in media law, constitutional and civil rights law, public records, election law, and appellate practice. He has been lead counsel in many landmark decisions construing the Oregon Constitution in the areas of religious liberty, open courts, commercial speech, election law and property rights. He taught constitutional law and First Amendment courses at Lewis and Clark College Law School for many years, and is a frequent speaker on topics relating to those areas of the law. Hinkle was an instructor in English at Morehouse College in Atlanta and is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ.
On Tuesday, April 14 Portland State University sociology professor Randy Blazak will give a talk titled, “Drawing the line between hate speech and free speech.” This will be held in the Oregon Room of WUC from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
A film will be shown on Wednesday, April 15 titled “First Amendment Project” at 1 p.m. in the Calapooia Room of WUC. Advancing the Dialogue will sponsor a discussion about the First Amendment in the Arbuthnot Hall Lounge at 7 p.m.
WOU political science professor Eliot Dickinson will talk about freedom of speech around the world on Thursday, April 16 from 11 a.m. to noon in the Columbia Room of WUC. An interfaith service will be held at noon in the WUC Plaza, with an interfaith dialogue immediately following in the WUC Den.
Ongoing events include the WOU Bookstore’s banned book display, a Wall of Expression on the second level of WUC and a read and respond activity in several classrooms around campus.
The Western Oregon Journal will release a special First Amendment Issue on Wednesday, April 15. Issues can be found throughout campus.
