MONMOUTH – Western Oregon University theatre students present “Debris Tossed About;” an original student-created performance piece, directed by theatre professor Michael Phillips, Ph.D. The performances are nightly in Rice Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. from Tuesday, May 29 through Friday, June 1, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, June 2.
This production is the culmination of a year long workshop project led by Phillips that explored various aspects of being human, including knowledge, senses, emotions, love, sex and basic needs. The students improvised text, created vocal soundscapes and developed ideas from conception to performance for this unique and engaging production.
The student actors are: Brad Adams, Josiah Bania, Sharon Biermann, Margaret Fitzgibbon, Curtis Glaccum, Christopher Keller, Sara King, Brooke Lawson, Jessica Leep, Paul Malone, Lisle Pedersen, McKenna Twedt, Matt Voisine and Alec Wilson. Crystal Cooper is the state manager.
Phillips is a professional director, with over 30 full-length professional and university level productions. His professional credits include work with Salem Repertory Theatre; Lord Leebrick Theatre Company in Eugene; Lancaster Opera in Lancaster, PA; and The Neighborhood Playhouse in Atlanta, GA. He has also worked as a dramaturg, most recently with Sojourn Theatre in Portland, OR. He received his doctorate from the University of Oregon, where his dissertation concerned the philosophical connections between 20th Century scientific theories, such as quantum physics, relativity, and chaos theory, and dramatic literature.
