WOU to host mock DUII crash and safety fair for high school students

for release:  Feb. 26 , 2010

MONMOUTH – Western Oregon University’s Department of Public Safety has planned an alcohol awareness event with a mock DUII crash and safety fair called “Forever Changed” on Wednesday, March 10. This event is free and open to the public.

The mock DUII crash, which will take place at the parking lot Q loop on campus at 1 p.m., will have five actors in two vehicles made up to look like they are suffering from injuries. A scenario will unfold for the spectators, beginning with the unveiling of the vehicles involved in the staged crash. Emergency personnel and law enforcement will be called and a DUII investigation will unfold.

Several local organizations and WOU departments will participate in the mock crash. REACH Air Medical will land their helicopter on-site to transport one of the “victims;” the Polk County Fire District #1, Monmouth Police Department, Independence Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office will be involved in the scenario as well.

The day also includes a keynote speaker and a safety fair, which will include organization such as MADD, the Red Cross, Oregon Impact and Salem Hospital. There will be 25 to 30 booths at the fair, which will take place in Werner University Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and will include information, games and prizes. The keynote speaker is Nigel Wrangham, a certified alcohol and drug counselor and certified prevention specialist. He has been active in the field of substance abuse prevention and community organizing since 1990. He served as Project Director for the Oregon Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking, and as the National Coordinator of Youth In Action for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. He teaches at both the University of Oregon and Portland Community College.

WOU has solicited sponsors to help fund the cost of lunch for local high school students and supplement transportation costs, when possible, for the high schools. Local high schools that will participate include Central, West Salem, North Salem, and Santiam Christian.

Sponsors of the event include the following WOU organizations: Campus Public Safety, Associated Students of Western Oregon University, the Student Activities Board, the Resident Hall Association General Assembly, WOU Housing and Dining. Off-campus organizations sponsoring the event include: Dutch Bros, Marquis Spas, ERS, Lyon Masonic Lodge, Oregon Impact, Yang’s Teriyaki, and the Salem Hospital Trauma Center.
