In their 41st year of touring and performing together, Oregon will grace the stage at Western Oregon University and open the 35th season of the Smith Fine Arts Series. For over four decades OREGON has inspired audiences in renowned concert halls from Carnegie Hall to the Berlin Philharmonic Hall; at international jazz clubs and major festivals such as Montreal, and Newport; and on tours through every continent save Antarctica. Their blend of world music and jazz continues to inspire listeners time and time again, and while they share their name with out great state, they rarely appear in concert here. Individually these four musicians (Ralph Towner, Glen Moore, Pauls McCandless, and Mark Walker) are among the finest in the world, together they are legendary.

Combine an American electric jazz guitar virtuoso with an Italian acoustic guitar virtuoso and you get this highly entertaining and musical duo. They have been wowing audiences across the globe with their genius, showcasing a repertoire spanning an incredible range of musical styles from county, bluegrass, mainstream jazz, modern pop and rock, to classical guitar. Smith is one of the hottest commodities in the world of jazz-fusion guitar and Buzzurro is the best of the best in the European acoustic guitar scene. With a new recording out, these two musicians are poised to bring the house down!

Since it’s founding in 1972, the Toronto Consort has become internationally recognized for its excellence in the performance of medieval, renaissance and early baroque music. In additions to a series of very fine recordings, they provided the performances for the soundtrack of the moving film The Sweet Hereafter. Their Smith Fine Arts Series performance The Da Vinci Codex will feature music from the time of the towering Renaissance figure Leonardo da Vinci. Whether portraying the haunting emotion of a minstrel’s ballad or capturing the sparkle of a rollicking madrigal, The Toronto Consort brings alive the glorious music of this seminal historical period.

December 2, 2011 The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Grammy Nominated recording artist, and Rolling Stone magazine “Immortal Artist” Martha Reeves is coming our way. The original Motown dance music Diva, her recordings as the leader of Martha and the Vandellas produced a string of immortal hits including Heat Wave, Nowhere to Run, Jimmy Mack, and the Motown anthem, Dancing In The Street. At this Smith Series event, Reeves will bring back those classic Motown sounds, singing her greatest hits, backed up by the always exciting Western Hemisphere Orchestra.

April 14, 2012 As the reigning “Queen of the Bossa Nova” and as Tony Bennett dubbed her “The Ella Fitzgerald of Brazil”, Leny Andrade is the quintessential Brazilian songstress. This Grammy winning chanteuse extraordinaire of Brazilian music combines Samba, Bossa Nova, and Jazz to create a sound you will always remember fondly. Born in Rio De Janeiro, Andrade’s career has taken her across the world singing with many of the world’s finest musicians, at this special event, Ms. Andrade will appear with the American Metropole Orchestra premiering all new orchestrations of her favorite standards.
As New York Times Critic Stephen Holden wrote, “To describe Ms. Andrade as both the Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald of bossa nova only goes so far in evoking a performer whose voice seems to contain the body and soul of Brazil.”
