The Jensen Arctic Museum, located at 590 W. Church St. on the Western Oregon University campus in Monmouth, is the only museum on the West Coast devoted solely to collecting, preserving, and teaching about Arctic culture and ecology.
It's an engaging museum for both young and old. Besides tours given by trained docents, the museum has videos and hands-on activities.
Visit the Arctic in Oregon! The museum's permanent and temporary exhibits will tempt you to learn more about the unique world of the Arctic in Europe, Canada, and Alaska. The diverse ways that animals and people have adapted to the harsh Arctic environment will intrigue you, even if you have previously experienced polar life.
The museum's mission is to present an accurate representation of the Arctic -- its geography, natural history, peoples and cultures, highlighting Arctic adaptation.
The museum building is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. It is closed on Christmas, New Year's, and Thanksgiving, and is open on Veterans Days and other holidays that occur during regularly scheduled days. This schedule accommodates school groups, families and other adult groups. It also facilitates visits by local and out-of-town visitors. Special tours may be arranged in advance with docents or the curator.
A non-profit group, the Friends of the Jensen Arctic Museum, sponsor activities and support the museum in many ways. To learn more about their activities and to become a member, contact: Friends of the Jensen Arctic Museum, c/o The Western Foundation, Western Oregon University, Monmouth, OR 97361.
