WOU Magazine Spring 2012: Feature stories

Greek life

Change remains a hallmark trait of life on a university campus and Western Oregon University is no exception. One big change to WOU is the addition of a student-initiated Greek life system. Students approached the Student Leadership and Activities Office in late 2010 about establishing these organizations on campus. The involved students will choose the national organizations to work with in creating WOU chapters.

Greek life fairs have been held, and more will be held, to raise awareness and garner interest from other students. Trenton Nettles, coordinator for campus life and activities, hopes to see eight sororities and fraternities established. Initially they will not have homes, but will be structured through meetings and events like other student organizations. Houses are given to Greek life organizations through donations, such as university alumni or famous members of that specific organization.

According to Nettles, statistics show that students involved in Greek life do better in college and get more involved in their schools, as well as become more prepared for life post-college.

"Greek life means being a part of a sisterhood.I want to make lifelong relationships with people and I hope to achieve this by becoming a sister of Kappa Delta Chi. I will benefit from KDChi by gaining leadership skills and gaining a sisterhood that will be with me for the rest of my life."
