Led by Lions Quest trainer Frances Portillo, this seminar is designed to help establish programs where young people can be active partners in a service learning project, connecting their voices in identifying community needs, planning service activities and evaluating their projects and their impact on their schools or communities. Service learning programs can equip and empower young people to take control of their learning, develop leadership skills, and assert themselves as responsible and engaged community members.

This seminar will help get you started in connecting learning to service and service to learning.   During the seminar participants will:

  • Learn how service learning enhances student performance and academic achievement;
  • Discuss how service learning enhances civic and citizenship education;
  • Identify the four elements of effective service learning projects;
  • Discover the difference between service learning, volunteerism and community service; and
  • Develop a plan for integrating service learning experiences into various subject areas in the school curriculum.
