Dissertation Topic:† Urban Redevelopment in Union Hill
The dissertation topic was urban redevelopment in Kansas City, Missouri.† Three years of intermittent field work was conducted on the gentrification of an old residential area of the inner-city known as Union Hill.† Field work included participant observation and activism with the Union Hill Tenants Association.† This organization carried on a political struggle with the City and the Union Hill Redevelopment Corporation over the issue of relocation benefits for residents displaced by redevelopment.† The role of the city and the state in providing incentives for the gentrification of Union Hill is an important policy issue considered in the dissertation.† The overall effect of gentrification on the availability of low-income housing in Kansas City was also analyzed.† This analysis was used in the development of a new city ordinance that governs redevelopment and tenant displacement. The basic impact is mandated superior relocation benefits for tenants.
