I think that the constant staring while you are out and about on the street is hard to get used to at first.  After spending some time here I have come to understand that it is normal for Italians to stare and that I can't do anything to change that so why would I let it bother me?  I have also adjusted by pick up some of their habits like walking slower and wearing typical clothing.  I love it here too much to let a small cultural difference get into the way of my enjoyment.
