This is the first opportunity I've had to do any traveling. I had always heard about globalization and the spread of American pop-culture, but never witnessed it personally. I've never been a big fan of pop-culture, McDonalds, or Burger King. The first week of travel, I just found the prevalence of American culture interesting. Hearing random American music was neither good nor bad, it was familiar, just very out of context. However, as time went on, hearing American music started to bother me. American music went from familiarly good to familiarly bad. Part of the reason I studied so far from home was to get away from the American culture I already knew. American music quickly went from something familiar to something invasive. Granted, I brought my ipod full American music, but I controlled where and when I listened to it. I turn it on and off, just long enough to get my fix. It feels like I can't get away from the influence of American pop-culture here though. It's hard to imagine how this will affect me in the future. I'll definitely be more conscious of our influence on other cultures. In future travels, I'll probably try to go to some less developed areas where (I hope) American culture isn't so strongly represented.
