If a local has been able to help, he has with great kindness, but if not, no attempt is made to be friendly. I once asked a man on the street where a Chinese restaurant is. He nodded and signaled to follow him. He walked for ten minutes out of his way and showed us right to the restaurant. Unbelievably helpful. Another few incidents where I have asked either for tickets or newspaper. The local "tsked" me with a head throw. Jerk. Couldn't he just say, "no, sorry?" The standard seems to be all or nothing here, and I also think it has become easier to cope with, as it is expected.
