Psychology 409
Practicums and/or Internships are the names we give to field
experiences with agencies and corporations who may employ bachelor
level psychology majors. An Internship is typically longer than a
Practicum. This experience is restricted to psychology majors who have
completed 20 credits of upper division psychology credits.
Practicum can be taken for 4 to 12 credits but students may only use
four hours of practicum toward the 56 hour psychology major.
Other hours will be applied to general electives. For each hour
of credit you receive, you are responsible for completing 30 hours of
work during the quarter. For example, taking a practicum for four
credit hours requires 120 hours of work over the 10 week quarter.
Most practicum experiences will be four hours. Students may take
a total of 12 hours of practicum in their entire college experience.
You should apply the first two weeks of the quarter before you wish to do practicum. For example, if you are applying for a winter practicum, the applicaiton process is the second and third week of the Fall term. Applications are due the Friday of the second week of the term by 3pm to the psychology main office. Practicum applications can be picked up outside of the psychology office or can be downloaded HERE and turned in. After applying, you must attend a mandatory practicum meeting. The meeting will be Monday, the third week of the term at 5:30pm, and Tuesday at 8:30am in the psychology library (Room 106) on the first floor of Todd Hall. You must attend ONE of these meetings to be considered for a practicum.
The Psychology Division does not guarantee a practicum to any
student. It is not required for graduation. We will do the best we can
to match you to the practicum supervisor and site. You should not make any contact with the
potential practicum site without talking with Dr. Roscoe first!
It is possible to combine the psychology practicum experience with the Community Scholarship experience. Please see Dr. Roscoe at least two quarters before you wish to do a practicum to discuss the possibility of combining the two.
