Research and Clinical Work Experience

 

 

Jan 03 – Sep 03                      MemAerobics Instructor/Coordinator at Southern Hills Assisted Living in Salem, Oregon.

 Description of Post                 Work with seniors in an assisted living facility to improve the effectiveness of memory, provide education on brain functioning, foster social support networks amongst residents, lessen depression, and increase confidence to live more independently.  This revolutionary cognitive enhancement program is designed specifically for residents in assisted living facilities with little or no cognitive impairment.  Conduct three sessions per week in a group format, participate in curriculum development and assist in program recruitment.

 
April 95 - Sept 95                  
Graduate Research Assistant at Simon Fraser University.

 
Description of Post                 Conduct literature searches using PsychLit and Eric, and provide weekly                                                  summaries of the research reviewed.                 

 
April 94 - Sept 94
                   Pre-Doctoral Internship at the Baycrest Centre For Geriatric Care.

                        Conduct neuropsychometric assessments on patients suffering from vascular
diseases, traumatic brain injuries, and depression.  Duties include administering
psychometric tests, clinical interviews, writing reports and providing feedback to patients and their families.  Secondary responsibilities include helping design and implement a database for departmental records, design spreadsheet for departmental statistics, and engage in other administrative functions.  Supervise summer student hires for data entry.  Additional duties from my previous employment capacity at Baycrest are also included in internship position. (please see * below).

*April 92 - Sept 94                 Research Investigator on a clinical drug trial of Eldepryl for treatment of Alzheimer's Disease, at the Baycrest Centre For Geriatric Care, departments of Behavioral Neurology, Rotman Research Institute, and Psychology. 

 

Description of Post                 Conduct clinical interviews with patients and caregivers in order to ascertain level of functioning, appearance of psychiatric symptomatology, and presence of depression in patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's Disease. Other duties include taking patient vital signs, dispensing of medication from the pharmacy, maintaining case-report forms (CRFs), administering psychometric tests, and performing statistical data analysis with SAS and SPSSX data packages. Attendance at weekly hospital rounds: Behavioral Neurology; Rotman Research; and Psychiatry, and in addition, Psychiatric Day Hospital team rounds for the purpose of assessment and treatment interventions. 

 

April 94 - Sept 94                   Private Neuropsychological Assessments for practicing Neuropsychologist in Toronto, Ontario, Dr. Gayle Kumchy.

 

Description of Post                 Administering neuropsychological examinations to patients suffering from traumatic brain injuries as a result of motor vehicle accidents, and writing reports. Additional file reviews are also written.

 

Sept 93 - Sept 94                    Research Assistant for the SAFE-T program (Sexual Abuse Family Education & Treatment) at Thistletown Regional Centre For Children & Adolescents - evenings.

 

 Description of Post                 Responsible in the co-development of two pilot studies: one looks at offense patterns for incest offenders and their MMPI personality profiles; and the second investigates factors that influence offenders to remain in treatment after their mandated court order. 

 

Sept 93 - Sept 94                    Collaborative research with a colleague at the Baycrest Centre For Geriatric Care investigating the cumulative and interactive neuropsychological effects of aging and head-injury, in contributing to frontal lobe dysfunction.

 

Description of Post                 Examine archival psychometric data of the study population, test "normal" subjects, and design a database. Involved in gathering this data and initial planning of research.

 

 Sept 91 - April 92                   Research Assistant on the development of an Emotion Diary for recording children's hostile behaviors and emotions expressed at school, at the Institute For Child Study, University of Toronto.

 

Description of Post                 Observe and interview elementary school children in the classroom and on the playground, in an attempt to capture the cause of provocation for particular emotions expressed by children. As primary investigator, my pilot observations became the framework for the Emotion Diary and I trained others on the use of the Diary.

 April 91 - Sept 91                   Project Coordinator on the Mood Disorders Unit at the London Psychiatric Hospital.

 

Description of Post                 Involvement in both research and clinical activities on the Mood Disorders Unit. Primary responsibility was as an investigator on a clinical drug trial of Fluoxetine in the treatment of depression.  Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, liason with drug companies, collect research data (chart reviews and direct patient contact), maintain clinical and research databases (CRFs), developand utilize a specialized clinician rating scale to monitor patient progress with staff psychologist, perform statistical analyses of data with SPSS/PC+ program, and attend various therapy groups.

 Sept 90 - June 91                    Research assistant in the Psychology department at the University of Western Ontario, investigating short-term memory performance.

 

Description of Post                 Responsibilities include helping the professor devise memory tests and equipment, conducting the experiments, and recording the data in a database. Different aspects of memory were investigated (e.g., incidental memory, rote recall, free and cued-recall, memory for stories).
