Ch 223 - General Chemistry Fall 2011

An introductory course in Chemistry for non-health majors (i.e. students majoring in Chemistry, Biology, etc). This quarter covers topics in kinetics and mechanisms, equilibrium, acid-base and precipitation reactions, thermodynamics, electrochemistry, and nuclear chemistry.

Calculators
A scientific calculator is mandatory. You must come prepared for every quiz, midterm, and final with your own calculator. You are not allowed to borrow one from another student while testing, and you may not use your cell phone as a calculator
Class Behavior You are expected to be attentive during lecture, no talking, no coming in late and disrupting the lecture, and only leave the lecture room if there is an urgent reason to do so. Otherwise you will asked to leave.
Cell Phones and Computers

This is a no computer, cell phone, texting, etc zone - they are distracting to students as well as to myself. You will be asked to leave if I see you engaged in these activities. Besides, what's the point to coming to class if you aren't paying attention?

Cell phones need to be either turned off or placed in vibrate mode during lecture. If I see you using one of these devices during testing, I will consider it cheating and give you a zero.

Recitation, Homework and Quizzes

There is a mandatory recitation section held every Monday at noon where quizzes are taken at the beginning, and then we will spend a lot of time working on concepts and homework problems. Occasionally I have to lelcture in order to get caught up.

There will be recitations where a quiz is NOT given. You can miss one of these recitations without penalty, but afterwards you lose 5 pts off of your final class score.

Each quiz will have Nomenclature and the Metric System on it. You must know these topics as a science major.

There will be seven 20 pt quizzes given during the recitation on the following dates:

Apr 4, Apr 11, Apr 18, Apr 25, May 2, May 9, May 16

Quiz questions are usually a reworked homework problem. Links to homework answer keys are available online as Adobe PDF files and can be found in the Syllabus section below.

Your lowest quiz score will be dropped. Since the lowest quiz score is being dropped anyway, there will be no make-ups on quizzes. If you miss three quizzes total (including the one you drop), then you fail the class.

Lab

WOU Chemistry Department Lab Manual. Look over labs before showing up since there are occasionally pre-labs to turn in. There are several "dry labs" where we solve problems etc, that must be performed in class.

Note: weekly labs don't follow numerical order as given in the lab manual.

You will be allowed to drop your lowest lab score (including an excused absence). There is a closed-book lab final that covers lab concepts and calculations, and is worth 25% of your lab score. If you miss three labs or don't take the lab final, you fail the course.

Exam Policies

There are no make-up exams except for University sanctioned events, in which case please see me a week in advance for an alternative testing time. In the event of an unexpected emergency, then -

Midterms: Family-related emergencies or deaths must be communicated through the Office of Student Affairs (838-8221) and broadcast to all your professors. Illnesses must be verifiable. Under these conditions there are two options for replacing the midterm score:

(1) If the exam hasn't been handed back to the class yet, then arrange a make-up time with me.

(2) If the exam has already been returned to the class, then I will replace the missing hour exam score by taking 30% of the percentage you receive on the final exam (since it is a 150 pt exam) and 70% of the other midterm score. This option can obviously only be used once.

Final exam: University policy states that the final exam time will not be moved. Please do not ask to take the final early because you want to leave for vacation early! There are humanitarian exceptions - see me if there's a problem. Again, if you miss the final and follow the same procedure listed above under midterms, then I will give you an incomplete and you can take the final in a future class section to make it up (see Incompletes section below).

Incompletes Incompletes are given under special circumstances such as medical reasons, family emergencies, etc. In order to receive an incomplete, the University requires you to sign a contract with me outlining the steps you must take to finish the course. Usually this means there will be a time deadline for completion of the course before your grade reverts to an "F".
Grading
200 pts (33%) 2 hour exams (Fri, Apr 29 and Fri, May 20)
200 pts (33%) comprehensive final (Mon Jun 6, 10-12 noon)
100 pts (17%) 25 pts from lab final, 75 points from lab exercises (drop lowest score)
100 pts (17%) quizzes (drop the lowest and scale total to 100 pts)
600 pts total

Grading will be no harder than 90% A, 80% B, 70% C, 60% D, < 60% F

Students with Disabilities

It is your right to request special accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. For questions, call the Office for Disability Services at (503) 838-8250 V/TTY, or email them at ods@wou.edu.

Academic Dishonesty

The Code of Student Responsibility defines cheating as "intentional use, or attempted use of artifice, deception, fraud, and/or misrepresentation of one's academic work". For this class, which involves taking exams, quizzes, and perform labs, cheating is usually but not limited to talking or writing to other students, using crib sheets (prepared notes), or looking at another student's paper. The penalty for cheating will be a zero grade for the test or quiz or assignment in question.

Students have the right to appeal this action as described in the Code of Student Responsibility
