Using Science Citation Index Online

The Institute for Scientific Information has produced citation indexes since 1963. ISI has recently provided access to the Science Citation Index on its Web of Science website.

The Web of Science consists of three separate databases that can be searched independently or in combination.

We have a two trial subscription to the Web of Science which will only be functional for the next two weeks. When you go to the Web of Science via the link below, you will be prompted to enter your username and password twice. Both must be entered in lowercase. Only 5 users may use this service simultaneously from Western.

Assignment.

You will carry out two searches using the Online Science Citation Index.

1. Citation Search

During your search or periodical indexes, you found articles written jointly by Elaine Ostrander and Jasper Rine. One of the articles you should have located was entitled "One Hundred and One New Simple Sequence Repeat-based Markers for the Canine Genome" which was published in Mammalian Genome in 1995. From this starting point, develop a list of articles that describe further research that has been published about the canine genome.

2. A General Search

Scenario: You need to locate and then varify the credibility of an expert witness for an upcoming court case involving a rape-murder case. You expert witness will be testifying about the use of DNA analysis. You will want to find a witness that has the appropriate expertise while being as close as possible to the Oregon. When you have finished you search, you will write a memo to your superior (course instructor) indicating your choice and justifying this choice.
