Organic chemistry is the study of carbon compounds. In this course you will study the structures, physical properties and chemical reactions of the different classes of organic compounds. You will be expected to apply basic principles to complex situations. You will need to be able to combine the chemical reactions into multistep syntheses. You will also need to be able to analyze data to deduce the identity of unknown substances. Organic chemistry is a cumulative subject. YOU CAN NEVER FORGET ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVE LEARNED! You may need to apply a reaction or principle that you studied in week four of Ch 334 to a situation encountered in week seven of Ch 336. There will be three lecture hours and one three hour laboratory scheduled for each week. The prerequisite for Ch 334 is successful completion of Ch 223. If you wish to take Ch 334 concurrently with Ch 223, you must get appoval from the Ch 334 Instructor. To be successful in Ch 335 and Ch 336, you should have earned a grade of "C" or better during the previous course in the sequence.
