Mathematics Education

Advisors:

Students wishing to obtain their degree in secondary education, may complete their preparation for the basic teaching license with a major in mathematics in a four year program.

Goals

  • Demonstrate mathematical reasoning
  • Demonstrate sophistication in studying and applying mathematics
  • Understand breadth of mathematics
  • Read, write, listen and speak mathematics
  • Understand theory and application of content areas studied

Prerequisite Skills

Students who have completed pre-calculus or an introduction to calculus in high school and receive a qualifying score on the placement test may enroll in Mth 251 Calculus. Others may find it necessary to take Mth 111 College Algebra and Mth 112 Elementary Functions before starting the calculus sequence. These students will find it difficult to complete the mathematics program in four years.

Students majoring in mathematics must take basic lower and upper-division core. Prerequisite classes are shown in parentheses.

Lower-division core (26)

  Mth 251 Calculus I (Mth 112) 5
  Mth 252 Calculus II (Mth 251) 5
Mth 253 Calculus III Sequences and Series (Mth 252) 3
  Mth 254 Multivariate Calculus (Mth 252) 5
Mth 280 Introduction to Proof (MTH 252) 3
  CS 161 Computer Science I 5

Upper-division core (20)

  Mth 311 Advanced Calculus I (Mth 253, Mth 254; Mth 341 concurrent) 4
Mth 341 Linear Algebra (Mth 254/concurrent, Mth 280 recommended) 4
  Mth 344 Group Theory (Mth 280, Mth 341) 3
  Mth 345 Ring Theory (Mth 344) 3
Mth 365 Mathematical Probability (Mth 253 or Mth 252) 3
  Mth 366 Mathematical Statistics (Mth 365) 3

Mathematics Education Core (19)

  Mth 337 Geometry or
Mth 338 Axiomatic Geometry (Mth 254; Mth 280 recommended)
3
Mth 346 Number Theory (Mth 253 or Mth 254; Mth 280 recommended) 3
Mth 355 Discrete Mathematics (Mth 253 or Mth 254; Mth 280 recommended) 3
Upper Division Electives 10 hours (Mth 397 recommended) 10

(MTH 280 may be waived for qualified transfer students)

The following is a possible schedule of classes for mathematics education majors for core classes. You will also need electives.

Until enrollment increases some classes will not be taught. MTH 396 may be substituted for MTH 397 until MTH 397 can be offered again. MTH 396 is offered every term. MTH 338 will only be offered every other year.

MTH* Mth 337, Mth 346, and Mth 355 will be offered in a fall and winter term in a rotation. You should start this rotation winter term of your sophomore year.

MTH** These are terms when you might take one of the four terms of electives that you need.

65 hours total. Physics is recommended as the LACC science requirement for mathematics education majors.
