College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

What does the "Liberal Arts" in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences mean?

"Liberal Arts" means different things to different people.

To some, liberal arts are the humanities—the study of literature, philosophy, history, fine arts and associated fields. Others also include social sciences.

To others, the liberal arts encompass all fields where the education is not clearly tied to a specific job.

No matter what your discipline, a firm grounding in the liberal arts will help you to hone very useful general skills including critical thinking, synthesis and analysis, clear written and spoken communication, effective work in teams, and ethical judgment. Anything you study that hones these skills is in the tradition of a liberal arts education, whether it is humanities, social science, arts, natural science or a pre-professional field.

Western Oregon University is a public liberal arts university, where the invaluable essence of a liberal arts education is infused throughout our degree programs.
