What is a writing consultant?
A writing consultant provides opportunities for Western Oregon students to work with a knowledgeable peer to brainstorm, organize, and review written work. Writing consultants are trained to help students improve their writing so that they can more successfully communicate.
Who is the Writing Center looking to hire?
The Writing Center is looking to hire undergraduate and graduate students in any discipline who have a passion for writing and helping other students improve their academic performance through writing. Successful writing consultants have excellent personal skills, can receive constructive feedback, and are willing to work with students whose English proficiency may not be ideal.
How does an interested student apply for a position?
Applications are available in the Writing Center (APSC 301) on the handout rack inside the door. Finished applications, including work samples and transcript, can be delivered to the Writing Center.

Writing consultants love to work at the Writing Center because it not only improves their writing, but also provides a sense of satisfaction in helping other students. Additionally, hours are scheduled around consultants' schedules and the work environment is supportive.
What does Writing Center employment do to prepare students for their careers after graduation?
Working at the Writing Center prepares students for their careers by requring a one-term internship class to develop writing and tutoring skills, providing opportunities to tutor student-writers one-on-one, and offering valuable work-experience in any field in education or where writing is a significant component.
Hiring occurs once each year: applications are accepted in Winter and Spring, applicant interviews occur in May, and the job begins in Fall.
