Dr. Cheryl Strand

B.S. South Dakota State University
M.A. Fresno State University
Ph.D. University California, Los Angeles

A descendant of pioneers, teachers and strong women, Cheryl crossed the Atlantic as a young woman to study in Spain where she became hopelessly enamored of the Spanish culture, sufficiently so as to make it the focus of her life's work. After having earned a doctorate in Hispanic Languages and Literatures at UCLA and having coordinated Spanish language classes at the University of Washington, she was chosen by Western to build a Spanish program. Responding to the challenge, she authored a Spanish major and strived to develop a quality program that would attract students. Dr. Strand promoted existing study-abroad programs and helped to develop new study abroad opportunities in Spain and Mexico. She is currently working on a joint faculty-student research project to explore the experience of Hispanic students studying abroad and has presented her findings at professional congresses. Other research interests include Spain's Generation of 1898, Spanish Woman Writers, Mexican Women Writers, the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, the Spanish poet Angel González, and pedagogy. She has attended professional congresses in Spain, Mexico, and the U.S., presented papers, and published articles, interviews with authors, and scholarly book reviews in professional journals. Professor Strand is the recipient of two Certificates of Appreciation for outstanding contributions to the language teaching profession from the Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching and her biography is included in such directories as Who's Who in the World and Who's Who in Education. Throughout her career, she has been awarded grants from Fulbright, the Del Amo foundation, and Western Oregon University for research in Spain. She was also awarded a grant to participate in a Faculty Development Seminar in Mexico. In addition to traveling, she enjoys writing poetry, taking photographs (some of each have been published), meditating, yoga, and spending time with her family.
