Course Descriptions
GL 101D, 102D, 103D First Year German (4) Acquisition of speaking, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis on communication and working with partners. Open to all students who wish to begin the study of German. Instruction is in German. Students reach Level A1 of the European Framework of Reference. Prerequisite: none.
A survey of German literary genres involving works in English translation. The study may include works of medieval through contemporary literature. Specific focus will be identified in each year's schedule of classes. Prerequisite: none. Terms and hours to be arranged.
Continuation of First Year but with added depth and breadth. Students reach Level A2 of the European Framework of Reference. Terms and hours to be arranged.
GL 301, 302, 303 Intermediate Comp and Con (4) Continuation of Second Year but with added depth and breadth. Students reach Level B1 of the European Framework of Reference.. Prerequisite: GL 203 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.
GL 310D German Film and Conversation (3) Study and conversation of German cinema within its social and historical contexts. Prerequisite: GL 203 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.
GL 320D Business German (3) Description and analysis of business terminology in German. Study of local business organization, operation and management. Introduction to the language of accounting, marketing, and economic matters in German-speaking countries.
A thorough study of the sound system of German, with individual attention to each student's difficulties. Distinguish between German and English sounds and practice with IPA. Prerequisite: GL 201 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.
Study of people and events that helped to shape modern Germany. An intimate study of figures and events including Karl the Great, the Crusades, Barbarossa, the Plague, Martin Luther, Frederick the Great.

GL 342D/Hum 342 Studies in German Culture and Literature to 1900 (3) An in-depth study of selected writers, forms and / or themes in German-speaking countries up to 1900. GL 350 Methods in Translation (3) Examinations of written and oral, structured, and free translations. Materials come from a variety of sources. Prerequisite: GL 203 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.

Continuation of Third Year but with added depth and breadth. Cultural/literary topics studied will be determined by the needs and interests of the class. Prerequisite: GL 303 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.
GL 406D Special Studies (1-6) Terms and hours to be arranged. Course can be repeated when content is different.
Readings from representative German authors within major genres of the periods.
Readings from representative German-speaking authors from Naturalism to the present.
Practice as a teaching assistant, particularly for teachers in training. Course may be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

GL 440D 19th Century Drama (3) An in-depth study of drama by Austrian, German, and Swiss authors within its historical, cultural, and intellectual context. Prerequisite: GL 303 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.
GL 441D 20th Century Drama (3) An in-depth study of drama by Austrian, German, and Swiss authors within its historical, cultural, and intellectual context. Prerequisite: GL 303 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.
GL 442D German Drama-Performance (4) The study and production of a German play. Prerequisite: GL 303 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.
