Sheridan, School for Scandal

1. Pay close attention to the names; which names do the best job of reflecting the characters?

2. Sheridan's main target in the satire is scandal/gossip; what other targets does he aim at?

3. Make a chart of the love interests and how they cross; discuss how the love interests affect the course of the play.

4. By the end of Act 3, which two characters do you most admire? why?

5. Imagine for yourself the "screen scene"; why/how does this scene create comedy? How is this like/unlike the portrait-selling scene?

6. What are the key weaknesses in Sir Oliver and Sir Peter? How do these compare in gravity to the weaknesses in the other major characters?
