Literature of the Western
World:
18th Century to Present
The
Spring quarter of Western literature focuses on texts from the late Enlightenment through
the mid-20th century. This period is home to a plethora of "isms" --
Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, Expressionism, Communism, Feminism, Colonialism [just to
name a few!!]. While we can only touch on a select few of these as we whiz through the
past 200 years, you will find yourself on more familiar terrain this term. I want to
encourage you to continue discovering connections between literature and "the
world," capitalizing now on your greater familiarity with the styles and issues. Let
me warn you now that we will be reading two novels over the course of the term, and while
novels are more familiar than epic poetry for most of you, they are still long. Don't
procrastinate or fall behind!
