First of all, let me encourage you to explore some of the web sites I've linked to from my own web site.  See the resources page.

 Assignments: Each class day will feature some activity designed to either test your understanding of the reading or challenge your ability to work with the text. These in-class (unannounced) quizzes and activities cannot be made up, but I will allow for some misses when tallying points. 'Quiz material can include information from introductions. In-class elements (outside of the assignments discussed below) add up to 20% of your grade.

Group "Exam" activities ' paper: (1) Each student will prepare as homework an assigned question (about 2 typed pages; writing must be coherent and decently spelled) and bring this to class on the days *ed on the schedule. (2) In class, students will work in groups to develop a thesis, outline, and textual support for a potential paper. Each group will share the thesis they develop. Both the homework and group work will be handed in that day. Students who come to class unprepared (reading and/or writing) for this activity will receive no homework points & only five group points and cannot do the paper on that work.
(3) Before the end of the term, each student must take ONE of these "potential paper" activities and actually write their own paper; while the final product may end up slightly different from the outline developed in class, the topic should be recognizable. You choose which work's due date best fits your schedule of other classes' due dates:
Lessing papers are due April 27;
Ibsen papers are due May 18;
WWI poetry papers are due June 1;
Calvino papers are due June 10th (Thursday of finals week).
PAPERS MUST GO THROUGH THE WRITING CENTER - MAKE AN APPOINTMENT, AND DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE NIGHT BEFORE TO TRY TO SEE A TUTOR!! (Planning ahead is especially important for the Calvino paper.) Finished papers should be 3-4 pages long (10-12 font, double spaced) and should cite quotes and references with the page #s in ( x ) after the quoted/referenced passage. Poetry citations should be to line #s.
The homework each time is worth up to 15 points, group work 10 points; taken together, all these points will be 25% of your grade. [If you are absent on a group day, you can still get the homework points by handing in your homework the day you return, but no group points, and you cannot write on that work for the paper.] The paper will be 30% of course grade.
'I will not grade a paper unless the writing center report card and group outline are attached. NO late papers will be accepted.

Final Exam: Will cover the entire term, but focusing most on works that were not covered in group "paper" sessions. Characters, literary terms, important images and symbols, are all fair game. Part of the test will include identifying quotations and discussing their importance in reference to the work, author, and/or cultural context. Exam will be 25% of the grade.
