Dr. Michael Phillips, Associate
Professor: Dr. Phillips
received his Ph.D. from
the University of Oregon
in 1996, where his dissertation
concerned the philosophical
connections between 20th
century scientific theories
(quantum physics, relativity,
and chaos theory) and dramatic
literature. He is a professional
director, with over 30 full-length
professional and university
level productions. His professional
credits include work with
Salem Repertory Theatre
in Salem, OR, Lancaster
Opera in Lancaster, PA,
Lord Leebrick Theatre Company
in Eugene, OR, and The Neighborhood
Playhouse in Atlanta, GA.
He has also worked as a
dramaturg, most recently
with Sojourn Theatre in
Portland, OR. At WOU, Dr.
Phillips teaches Theatre
History, Dramatic Literature,
and Directing.

David Janoviak: David Janoviak is a professional actor, director and teacher. David has been a professor of theatre and Head of Acting at Western Oregon University for the past thirteen years. As an actor, he has performed at many regional and professional theatres across the country and abroad, including The Northern Stage Company, Theatre Hebertot (Paris), Actor’s Repertory Theatre, The Spotlight Theatre, The Dallas Shakespeare Festival, Salem Repertory Theatre, CoHo theatre and seven seasons with the Utah Shakespeare Festival. Janoviak has also directed over fifty productions. He served as artistic director of the Spotlight Theatre Company in Milwaukee, WI for five seasons and was a founding member and artistic director of Salem Repertory Theatre, where he produced over twenty shows and directed and acted seasonally. He has won numerous awards for his acting and directing, including Best of 1990 in Theatre Week Magazine for his performance in the title role of Dr. Faustus.

Scott Grim / Professor;
Scenic Designer: Scott Grim
is currently a Scenic Designer
and Professor
of theatrical design and
technology at Western Oregon
University. He holds an
M.F.A. in Theatre (Scenic
Design emphasis) from the
University of Georgia. Mr.
Grim has designed numerous
theatrical productions outside
of WOU, including Leach
Theatre in Missouri, Highlands
Playhouse of North Carolina
and Pentacle Theatre. A
number of his designs have
been included in the United
States Institute for Theatre
Technology International
Design Archive. He has served
as Technical Director at
various institutions for
over 14 years, including
the Jekylle Island Musical
Comedy Festival on Jekylle
Island, Georgia. Some of
the over 40 productions
Mr. Grim has designed include
Playboy of the Western World,
God’s Country, Fuddy
Meers, Into the Woods, Macbeth,
Noises Off and You Can’t
Take it With You.

Sandra Hedgepeth / Associate Professor; Costume Designer:
Sandy received her MFA in
Costume Design from Florida
State University. She has
worked as a professional
costume designer all over
the United States and at
several theatres in Portland,
including: Tygres Hart Theatre,
Northwest Children’s
Theatre, Portland Opera,
the Utah Shakespearean Festival,
and the Barter Theatre.
She has also worked extensively
with Michael Curry Design
Studios.

Tad Shannon / Assistant Professor; Lighting Designer: (RA 108, 838-8095, shannont@wou.edu): Tad recently joined the WOU faculty after many years as a freelance lighting designer. He has been the resident designer with Portland’s Do Jump Movement Theatre since 1992, designing the lighting and rigging for national tours in 2000, 2001 and 2007. He received a Theatre LA Ovation award for the lighting of the Los Angeles production of Do Jump’s Openings and Doors at the Geffen Playhouse. He has designed lights for a wide variety of regional dance and theatre companies including many productions as the resident designer for Portland’s New Rose Theatre and San Francisco’s Sweet Can Productions. He has designed for Rainbow Dance Theatre since 2002. Tad received his Ph.D. in Systems Science from Portland State University in 2007.

Ted deChatelet
/ Full-time Non-Tenure Faculty: Ted deChatelet: Ted is a professional actor, director, teacher and fight choreographer who has worked extensively in New York and in Regional Theatres around the country including: Classic Stage Company, The Culture Project NYC, ACT Seattle, Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theatre, Third Rail Repertory, Public Playhouse, Profile Theatre, CoHo Theatre, Milagro Theatre, the Oregon Symphony, Salem Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Rep, Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Buffalo Studio Arena and the Shakespeare Festivals of Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois and North Carolina. In addition to the stage, Ted has worked in front of the camera in numerous commercials, industrials, and films. Ted has studied with Wynn Handman in NYC and with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He is an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voiceworkä and a Certified Teacher of Stage Combat with the Society of American Fight Directors. He co-owns Revenge Arts Stage Combat (www.revengearts.com) and has directed violence for over 40 professional and collegiate productions.

Kent Neely, Professor: Dr. Neely received his Ph.D. in 1976 from Wayne State University where he was part of the Hilberry Repertory Theatre. He been a faculty member at East Carolina University, University of Minnesota, where he was University Theatre Managing Director (1977-94), Boise State University where he was Chair, Department of Theatre Arts (1994-98) and Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences (1998-2001). He became Dean of Arts and Sciences at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 2001 before becoming Provost and Vice President for Academic affairs at Western Oregon University in 2008. Dr. Neely has provided theatre management leadership for over 270 play productions. His scholarship has been shared through Theater Journal, Theatre Studies, The Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism, Theatre Design and Technology and at national and regional professional meetings. During his career, Dr. Neely has taught classes in theatre management, history and literature.

Ryan Wright, Technical Direcor: Ryan received a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Technical and Design from Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. While in college he worked for the Santa Fe Opera (Santa Fe, NM) and Pennsylvania Center Stages (State College, PA) as part of the stage and electrics crews. Since graduating, Ryan has worked at a number of professional theatres and entertainment companies across the United States. These include Fireside Dinner Theatre (Fort Atkinson, WI) as Master Electrician, Field Installation Supervisor and Regional Manager for Creative Realities Inc. (Fairfield, NJ), Technical Director for Rollins College, as a Master Electrician and a general technician for Innovative Show Designs (Longwood, FL).

Rachel received her BA (Summa Cum Laude) in Theater Arts from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon and her MFA in Costume Technology from the University of Arizona. She interned at both the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in costume shop management and at the Arizona Opera. Rachel has worked professionally for the Arizona Repertory Theater, The Arizona Theater Company, The University of Arizona Dance Department and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She worked for the University of Arizona Planetary Sciences Department on the Mars Phoenix Lander display. When not working she enjoys knitting, felting, shibori, aikido and being a mother.
