Guest Choreographer
Paula Weber is Chair of the Dance Division and a professor of dance with UMKC's Conservatory of Music and Dance. Professor Weber received her Bachelor of Arts degree (in Dance) from Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. She went on to Smith College in Massachusetts where she obtained her Master of Fine Arts degree in dance.
Professor Weber has studied ballet with such masters as Maria Tallchief, Jean Paul Comelin, Dermot Burke, Basil Thompson, Larry Long, Marjorie Mussman, and Maggie Black. During her professional ballet career she performed solo and principal roles in more than 45 major works which include classics Odette/Odile in Swan Lake, Giselle inGiselle, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella in Cinderella, and Swanhilda in Coppelia. Her solo/principal performances extend to such contemporary works as George Balanchine's Concerto Barocco (First Violin), Agnes DeMilles Fall River Legend (Lizzy Borden). John Butler's Carmina Burana, and Alvin Ailey's The River. She has worked with many renowned choreographers and been a member of many different ballet companies including the Milwaukee Ballet (principal), the Albany Berkshire Ballet (principal), Lyric Opera Ballet of Chicago (soloist), Chicago Ballet, and the Indianapolis Ballet Theatre. She performed as a guest principal with the Hartford Ballet as well. Currently, in addition to her teaching position, she is the assistant director and rehearsal director for the Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company and is ballet mistress for the Albany Berkshire Ballet.
Professor Weber has obtained many prestigious awards from the Conservatory of UMKC as well as abroad. She was invited to be a guest instructor of ballet for the Shenyang Conservatory of Music, in Shenyang, China. Only one other American instructor has ever had that opportunity. She has received many "Excellence in Teaching" awards through the Conservatory at UMKC. She is an adjudicator for Regional Dance America as well as a choreographer. Her choreography has been performed by the Kansas City Ballet, the Albany Berkshire Ballet, the Kansas Regional Ballet, the Wylliams/Henry Contemporary Dance Company, Midwest Youth Ballet, Allegro Ballet of Houston, and City in Motion. The Kansas City Ballet performed her first choreographed ballet in 1996 (Carmina Burana). Professor Weber was invited to participate in the National Choreographers Initiative, 2011. The NCI was developed to promote the creation and production of professional dance. It is also an opportunity to engage outstanding choreographers from around the United States in the creative process. |
