Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Music

The Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Contemporary Music is the professional degree that prepares students for professional careers in the music industry, graduate study in music, and preparation for the MAT - initial licensure. Students who take the BM degree complete 120 credit hours in music courses and fulfill the 42-hour BM general education core in lieu of the liberal arts core curriculum (LACC). There is no minor required in the BM degree. The 120 credit hours of required courses for the BM degree include:

  • Theory & Aural Skills (27 cr.)

  • Music History & Ethnomusicology (18 cr.)

  • Applied Music (38 cr.)

    • Conducting (6 cr.)
    • Improvisation (2 cr.)
    • Ensembles (12 cr.)
    • Applied lessons (18 cr.)
  • Professional Development (7 cr.)

    • Concert attendance (9 units/O cr.)
    • Capstone project (0 cr.)
    • Junior & senior seminars (4 cr.)
    • Business of Music (3 cr.)
  • Upper Division Music Electives (30 cr.)

 

Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Music: Musical Theatre Emphasis

Students may elect to pursue the Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Contemporary Music with an emphasis in Musical Theatre. Students who take the Musical Theatre emphasis complete 90 credit hours in music courses, 30 credit hours in theatre and dance, and fulfill the 42-hour BM general education core in lieu of the liberal arts core curriculum (LACC). There is no minor required in the BM - Musical Theatre emphasis. The 120 credit hours of required courses for the BM degree in Musical Theatre include:

  • Music History & Ethnomusicology (15 cr.)

  • Applied Music (41 cr.)

    • Conducting (3 cr.)
    • Improvisation (2 cr.)
    • Ensembles, including musical theatre (18 cr.)
    • Applied lessons (18 cr.)
  • Professional Development (7 cr.)

    • Concert attendance (9 units/O cr.)
    • Capstone project (0 cr.)
    • Junior & senior seminars (4 cr.)

  • Theatre/Dance Core (30 cr.)

Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Music: Jazz Studies Emphasis

Students may elect to pursue the Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Contemporary Music with an emphasis in Jazz Studies. Students who take the Jazz Studies emphasis complete 120 credit hours in music courses, including 30 credit hours in improvisation, jazz theory, jazz arranging, and songwriting; and fulfill the 42-hour BM general education core in lieu of the liberal arts core curriculum (LACC). There is no minor required in the BM - Jazz Studies emphasis. The 120 credit hours of required courses for the BM degree in Jazz Studies include:

Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Music: Popular Music Emphasis

Students may elect to pursue the Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Contemporary Music with an emphasis in Popular Music (American vernacular music). Students who take the Popular Music emphasis complete 120 credit hours in music courses, including 30 credit hours in improvisation and songwriting; and fulfill the 42-hour BM general education core in lieu of the liberal arts core curriculum (LACC). There is no minor required in the BM - Popular Music emphasis. The 120 credit hours of required courses for the BM degree in Popular Music include:

Bachelor of Arts in Music & the Bachelor of Science in Music

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees are liberal arts degree programs with a major in music and a minor in an area other than music. Students who take the BA or BS in music complete 70 credit hours in music courses in addition to the liberal arts core curriculum (LACC) and a minor in another academic discipline. The 70 credit hours of required courses for the BA and the BS degrees in Music include:
