Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Music
The Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Contemporary Music is the professional degree that prepares students for professional careers in the music industry and for graduate study in music. Students who take the BM degree complete 120 credit hours in music courses and fulfill the 42-hour BM general education core in lieu of the liberal arts core curriculum (LACC). There is no minor required in the BM degree. The 120 credit hours of required courses for the BM degree are:

  • Theory & Aural Skills - 27 cr. hours
  • Music History & Literature - 18 cr. hours
  • Applied Music, Ensembles, & Conducting - 38 cr. hours
  • Professional Development - 6 cr. hours
  • Upper division electives - 31 cr. hours

Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Music: Music Theatre emphasis
Students may elect to pursue the Bachelor of Music (BM) degree in Contemporary Music with an emphasis in Musical Theatre. Students who take the Musical Theatre emphasis complete 90 credit hours in music courses, 30 credit hours in theatre and dance, and fulfill the 42-hour BM general education core in lieu of the liberal arts core curriculum (LACC). There is no minor required in the BM - Musical Theatre emphasis. The 120 credit hours of required courses for the BM degree with a Musical Theatre emphasis are:

  • Theory & Aural Skills - 27 cr. hours
  • Music History & Literature - 12 cr. hours
  • Applied Music, Ensembles, Conducting, Musical Theatre Production - 41 cr. hours
  • Professional Development - 6 cr. hours
  • Upper division electives - 4 cr. hours
  • Theatre/Dance Block - 30 cr. hours

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in Music
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees are liberal arts degree programs with a major in music and a minor in an area other than music. Students who take the BA or BS in music complete 69 credit hours in music courses in addition to the liberal arts core curriculum (LACC) and a minor in another academic discipline. The 69 credit hours of required music courses for the BA/BS degree are:
  • Theory & Aural Skills - 27 cr. hours
  • Music History & Literature - 18 cr. hours
  • Applied Music, Ensembles, & Conducting - 15 cr. hours
  • Professional Development - 9 cr. hours

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in The Arts
This degree combines three areas of emphasis chosen from Music, Art, Theater, or Dance. 36 credit hours are taken in the student's first area of emphasis, 24 credit hours in the second area of emphasis, and 12 credit hours in the third area of emphasis. In addition, a minor is required.
